Puri is a deep-fried bread made from unleavened whole-wheat flour that originated in the Indian subcontinent. It is eaten for breakfast or as a snack or light meal. It is usually served with a savory curry or bhaji, as in puri bhaji, but may also be eaten with sweet dishes .
Ingredients:
– 2 cups of whole wheat flour
– 1/2 teaspoon of salt
– 1 tablespoon of oil
– 3/4 cup of water
– Oil for deep-frying
Instructions:
1. In a large mixing bowl, add the whole wheat flour and salt. Mix well.
2. Add the oil and mix it into the flour mixture using your fingers until it resembles coarse breadcrumbs.
3. Gradually add water and knead the dough until it’s smooth and firm.
4. Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for 10-15 minutes.
5. Heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat.
6. Meanwhile, divide the dough into 12 equal portions and roll each portion into a small ball.
7. On a lightly floured surface, roll out each ball into a thin, circular shape using a rolling pin. The puri should be around 4-5 inches in diameter.
8. When the oil is hot enough, carefully slide the puri into the oil. It will immediately rise to the surface.
9. Using a slotted spoon or spatula, gently press down on the puri, helping it to puff up. Flip the puri and cook the other side until it turns golden brown.
10. Remove the puri from the oil and place it on a paper towel to remove any excess oil.
11. Repeat the process with the remaining dough balls.
12. Serve hot with your favorite curry or aloo sabzi.
